The North West Composite Centre's objective is to set up a composites centre in the north west of England that draws together and enhances the scientific expertise in the north west universities to create a centre of international scientific reputation. It is a collaborative venture between University of Manchester, University of Manchester Institute of Science & Technology, University of Liverpool, University of Lancaster and University of Bolton. Its mission is to
- undertake applied research leading to the development of new, cost effective, low energy, low cycle time composites processing routes for making real components and demonstrators
- establish the effect of these production routes on composite structure and performance and thereby optimise their fitness for purpose
- act as a regional centre of expertise supporting, evaluating and introducing innovation in composite manufacture and design.
The Centre will focus on 3D fibre structures and high-speed composite cure. Facilities will include microwave processing, quickstep processing, resin transfer moulding, robotic tow placement, C-scan and X-ray tomographic imaging.
