The Metal Matrix Composites (MMCs) Working Group's activities are concentrated in two areas

1 Development of an MMC roadmap

In March 2006, the MMC Working Group ran a roadmapping workshop to define the current state and future goals for MMCs in UK. Roadmapping is a knowledge capture technique that defines the capabilities, technologies and products required to achieve these goals. Its top-level recommendations and actions are

• To develop a strong network to improve communication, share best practice and speed up innovation
• To develop an MMC database
• To improve MMC publicity through better articles and case studies
• Develop more collaborative FP7 programmes to boost R&D investment.

2 MMC database

The key deliverable of the MMC workgroup, an online MMC database, is now complete and live. Developed by the Northwest Composites Centre, this comprehensive resource gives detailed coverage to areas such as: material types and properties; production routes and processing; industrial applications; suppliers; publications and key contacts.
